NEW SCHOLARSHIP SCHEME ENCOURAGES RESEARCH LINKED TO BOOK OF COMMON PRAYER image

NEW SCHOLARSHIP SCHEME ENCOURAGES RESEARCH LINKED TO BOOK OF COMMON PRAYER

7th August 2019

A brand new scholarship with a potential value of £6,000 is announced by the Prayer Book
Society (PBS) which encourages rediscovery and use of the majesty and spiritual depth of
the Book of Common Prayer (BCP) at the heart of the Church of England’s worship.

The PBS has established the scheme in a bid to increase academic research relating to the
Prayer Book compiled by Thomas Cranmer, a leader of the Reformation and Archbishop of
Canterbury during the reigns of Henry VIII, Edward VI and Mary I.

The John Cosin Scholarship for postgraduate research relating to the BCP is named after a
seventeenth century English churchman born 38 years after Cranmer’s death. Cosin, who
was Bishop of Durham from 1660 to 1672, previously held the post of Vice-Chancellor of
Cambridge University.

He played a leading role in the revision of the Prayer Book in 1662. Among his writings –
most of which were published posthumously – are Notes and Collections on the Book of
Common Prayer.

The new scholarship, which will be awarded by a panel appointed by PBS trustees, is open
to anyone currently registered for a higher degree by research (Master’s or Doctor’s) in any
applicable academic discipline at a UK university.

Valued at £2,000 per annum, the scholarship may be renewed for a second and third year to
total £6,000 subject to annual reports from the scholar’s academic supervisor.

‘The scholar will be expected to participate in the work of the PBS on at least one occasion,
typically by speaking at a society event or writing a paper for its periodic review, Faith &
Worship,’ explained the society’s deputy chairman David Richardson.

He revealed that the scholarship might be offered again in subsequent years as PBS funds
permit.
