PUGIN’S ONLY ANGLICAN CHURCH JOINS US image

PUGIN’S ONLY ANGLICAN CHURCH JOINS US

3rd December 2019

An Oxfordshire church which is the only complete Anglican commission designed and
supervised by Augustus Pugin – the architect who worked closely with Sir Charles Barry on
the design competition for the Palace of Westminster – is one of the latest to join the Prayer
Book Society as a corporate member.

St Lawrence Church in Tubney near Abingdon, completed in 1847 and repaired in 1954 with
the aid of an appeal by the poet Sir John Betjeman, has always used the Book of Common
Prayer for all its services of Morning Prayer and Holy Communion.

‘Many of those in our congregation come from other local parishes because they love the
Prayer Book language and the tradition it represents,’ reports the church’s churchwarden
Mrs Rosemary Kitto.

St Lawrence Church has been selected as the venue for next year’s August meeting of
Oxford Diocese branch members of the Prayer Book Society which encourages rediscovery
and use of the majesty and spiritual depth of the Book of Common Prayer at the heart of the
Church of England’s worship.
