BERKSHIRE CHURCH ROWS IN AS THIS YEAR’S FIRST NEW MEMBER OF THE PRAYER BOOK SOCIETY image

BERKSHIRE CHURCH ROWS IN AS THIS YEAR’S FIRST NEW MEMBER OF THE PRAYER BOOK SOCIETY

1st February 2021

The Prayer Book Society, which encourages rediscovery and use of the majesty and
spiritual depth of The Book of Common Prayer at the heart of the Church of
England’s worship, reports that an historic Thames-side church in Berkshire is its first
new corporate member in 2021.

Mentioned in the Domesday Book and situated in what has been described as ‘a
quintessentially English setting’ on the south bank of the river, downstream from
Henley-on-Thames on the Berkshire bank, the church of St Nicholas is located in the
ancient parish of Remenham, famous for its associations with rowing and, since
1839, Henley Royal Regatta.

‘The decision to join the Prayer Book Society was prompted by our new rector, the
Rev Jeremy Tayler, who is enthusiastic about use of the Book of Common Prayer
during services,’ explains the churchwarden Charlotte Every.

‘We have always used the Prayer Book for every service, including Matins and Holy
Communion, and will continue to do so,’ she said. ‘We aim to encourage people to
appreciate its wonderful language and spirituality.’

Charlotte added: ‘Although the average size of Sunday congregations is less than 20,
all members of our church are lovers of the Prayer Book and its regular use prompts
them to attend each week.’

Among those commemorated in the church is Lord Hunt of Llanfair Waterdine who,
as Colonel John Hunt, led the successful 1953 British Mount Everest expedition.
