COVENTRY CATHEDRAL’S MUSICAL WORLD FIRST CELEBRATES THE BOOK OF COMMON PRAYER

12th May 2021

News of a ‘world first’ musical premiere event at Coventry Cathedral this month has
been welcomed by the Prayer Book Society (PBS) which encourages rediscovery
and use of the majesty and spiritual depth of the Book of Common Prayer (BCP) at
the heart of the Church of England’s worship.

Commissioned by the Friends of Coventry Cathedral as their contribution of
Coventry’s year as UK City of Culture, new settings of the Magnificat and Nunc
Dimittis – found in the BCP’s Evening Prayer service – will be performed in the
cathedral for the first time on Sunday, May 16 at 4 pm.

The new work has been composed by Jonathan Rathbone, a former chorister at
Coventry Cathedral. Previously a musical director of the Swingle Singers, Jonathan
also has worked with Katherine Jenkins, the King’s Singers, Sir Cliff Richard, Michael
Ball, Stephen Cleobury, the Choir of Kings College, Cambridge, and a variety of
orchestras across Europe.

Jonathan’s new work is dedicated to the memory of Professor Roger and Mrs
Catherine Morgan.

‘Both were active innovators in areas which resonate with the ministry of Coventry
Cathedral, particularly reconciliation and European understanding,’ explains Martin
Williams, chairman of the Friends of Coventry Cathedral who have organised the
event.

Admission on May 16 is by ticket only to ensure compliance with distancing
regulations. Tickets are free of charge and can be reserved online through
Eventbrite using this link: https://www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/choral-evensong-on-

Those unable to attend can access the live event via the cathedral's Facebook
page at tiny.cc/cathfacebook.
