NEW PBS VIDEO ABOUT A BOOK FOR EVERY DAY

16th August 2018

A new 12-minute video which has gone live on this website explains why The Book of Common Prayer is an important book for every day – not just Sundays – and contains services marking key stages of human life.

The video features a sermon preached on August 5, 2018 by the Rev Richard Smail, honorary priest-in-charge at the church of St Leonard and St James in Rousham, Oxfordshire. The church is a corporate member of The Prayer Book Society and many of its Oxford Branch members attended the service of Sung Matins with shortened Holy Communion.

Richard explains the significance of the words ‘Common Prayer’ in the title of the ancient book. He also highlights some of its words and phrases which we use today in everyday conversation. They include: fire and brimstone; softer than butter; at death’s door and at their wits’ end.

Richard shows how Cranmer made the language of the Prayer Book dignified and memorable by his use of a blend of longer, more sophisticated words derived from Latin and shorter, common ones drawn from Anglo Saxon, and how this blending produced resonant and effective rhythms and cadences.
