Sheffield Branch Choral Evensong at Beauchief Abbey to mark the 50th Anniversary of the Prayer Book Society

September 18, 2022 at 3:00 pm

The Sheffield Branch will be celebrating the 50th year of the Prayer Book Society with a Choral Evensong in Beauchief Abbey at 3.00 p.m. on Sunday 18 th September.

The Preacher will be Canon Fr Andrew Sage SSC.

The Abbey, a Premonstratensian foundation dating from the 12 th century, housed the White Canons (so called from their white habits) who were all priests and ministered to the surrounding communities. It was practically all destroyed in the dissolution of the monasteries in the 16th century. Nowadays it consists of the original tower with a 17 th century chapel attached. It is a ‘liberty’ church within the Diocese of Sheffield, not subject to the Bishop, but run by a small committee of dedicated people who invite volunteer priests or readers to take its regular Sunday services. It is a corporate member of the Prayer Book Society and uses only the 1662 Book of Common Prayer.

It is hoped to have members of the Steel City Choristers to swell the choir. This is a group of young people who come together to sing classical and modern church music under their enthusiastic conductor and visit various churches in turn.

Light refreshments will be served after the service which marks the end of the Abbey’s Heritage weekend. All visitors are most welcome.

For sat.nav. users the full address is Beauchief Abbey, Beauchief Abbey Lane, Sheffield, S8 7BD. There is plenty of parking along the Lane.
