Cranmer Day Salisbury

More than thirty members and supporters gathered at Salisbury Cathedral for evensong on Thursday 21st March to mark the anniversary of the martyrdom of ArchbishopThomas Cranmer.

We met first in the refectory for afternoon tea and then proceeded into the Cathedral. The Salisbury branch president, The Hon Diana Makgill CVO was invited to read the second lesson. In all, approaching one hundred gathered for this Lenten Evensong to remember the collator af the BCP. The choir (girls and men) sang the service including the Byrd Responses, Shephard in A and William Harris’s lovely setting of John Donne’s poem:

Bring us, O Lord God, at our last awakening into the house and gate of heav'n: to enter into that gate and dwell in that house, where there shall be no darkness nor dazzling, but one equal light, no noise nor silence, but one equal music no fears nor hopes, but one equal possession, no ends nor beginnings, but one equal eternity in the habitation of thy glory and dominion, world without end. Amen.

A most fitting prayer on the day when we remember the courage of the founder of the liturgy of the Church of England.

It was good to see not only PBS members but a good number of supporters too. We do hope to welcome them to future meetings as members. It was also good to feel so welcomed by the Cathedral, we are very grateful for their kindness in facilitating our visit.
