Safeguarding is a matter of prime importance for the Prayer Book Society. In the Archbishop of Canterbury’s New Year address, safeguarding was rightly identified as a defining priority for the Church as a whole. That emphasis reinforces our own conviction that safeguarding must be taken seriously, thoughtfully, and proportionately.
Over the past year the Society has been reviewing its safeguarding arrangements to ensure they are robust, up to date, and workable for a small charity that relies heavily on volunteers. We are keen to reassure branch officers and key volunteers that this work is not intended to make routine activity burdensome.
For the great majority of branch meetings and Society events, where there are no children or young people present and where participants are independent adults, safeguarding will remain light-touch. In such settings, awareness, courtesy, and good judgement will normally be sufficient, and members should not expect additional bureaucracy or changes to how these activities are run.
Some areas of our work — particularly the Cranmer Awards and any activities involving children or young people — require a higher level of formality, and our arrangements will reflect that distinction.
We are therefore pleased that, going forward , PBS will be working with Christian Safeguarding Services to finalise what will be a clear and practical safeguarding framework. Most safeguarding processes will be managed centrally by the Society’s office team.
Further information will be shared as this work progresses.
