Iain Milne was born in London, christened at the Church of Scotland parish church of Fairmilehead, Midlothian, and confirmed at York Minster whilst studying History at the University of York. He went on to train, qualify, and practice as a solicitor in York, and he presently works as an in-house lawyer for the British Library. He lives with his wife and young children in the market town of Knaresborough in the West Riding of Yorkshire. He has served as a churchwarden and in various PCC roles.

He joined the PBS Board in 2017, since when he has been particularly involved in updating the PBS constitution, developing the PBS's social media presence, introducing online events to the PBS calendar, and the development of resources and publications around the PBS's 50th anniversary and His Majesty's coronation. He currently serves as chair of the PBS's Communications and Nominations and Patronage sub-committees and as convenor of the Edith Matthias Fund trustees.
