The Revd George Dowty (1811- 1889) was born in Kidderminster into a Methodist family. He served as an Anglican minister and his last parish was St Mary the Virgin, Stockleigh  English near Crediton in Devon.

Sir George Dowty and his son visited the church in the early 1970's and were given the Revd Dowty’s 1881 Prayer Book. This book has now been restored and a Prayer Book service to mark its return to Devon has been arranged.

The church is now a Chapel of Ease and is part of St. Matthew's Church, Cheriton Fitzpaine. It is always open for you to come in and enjoy the beauty and quiet.
