John Wesley, one of the founders of Methodism, had a long association with London’s oldest parish church, St Bartholomew the Great. His friendship with Rector Richard Bateman (1738–60) meant he was granted a pulpit here long after he was barred from most Anglican churches, and Wesley himself said of our church that he found “As much of real religion as was ever was preached there”. This evening, we celebrate this legacy with a special Wesleyan Evensong, featuring music and hymnody composed by members of the Wesley family.
After Evensong, Dr. Ryan N. Danker, the founding director of the John Wesley Institute in Washington, DC will give a lecture entitled ‘By A Very Uncommon Train of Providences: Wesley's Revised Prayer Book’. A drinks reception will follow the lecture.
