A remarkable homecoming took place recently at the church of St Mary the Virgin, Stockleigh English in rural Devon.
At the Harvest Festival, Auriel Glanville, became the first member of the Dowty family to stand in the church’s pulpit for 137 years. She was following in the footsteps of family member the Revd George Dowty, who was Rector of the church, in the 1880’s and who passed away in 1889.
It’s the second occasion that Harvest Festival at the Chapel of Ease has enjoyed a significant occasion.
In 2024 a restored Prayer Book belonging to the late Revd George Dowty was given to the church by the then incumbent.
The return of the Prayer Book, together with the presence of a new generation of the Dowty family, brought past and present together in a fitting celebration of faith, family history and the enduring heritage of St Mary’s Church.
