Two Kilmister Awards were made at the recent AGM of the Prayer Book Society.
The Awards, named after the late Tony Kilmister, acknowledge distinguished voluntary service made to the life of the Society by lay members.
Geoffrey Horne has served the Oxford Branch of the Society for 17 years as a Chairman, Vice Chairman and Treasurer was the first recipient.
Making the award, Bradley Smith, Chairman of the PBS, said Geoffrey had lavished so much time and care on the Branch and had been nominated for the award by his fellow members on the Oxford Branch Committee.
The second recipient was former PBS Trustee Nicholas Hurst. Bradley told the audience in St Giles-in-the-Fields, London that former trustees are not eligible to receive the award, but they had decided to ‘override our own rules’ in this instance.
Nicholas’ work for the Society goes back almost to its formation in 1972. He has been a very distinguished chairman of the Cranmer Awards Committee which organises the annual competition of school students to recite portions of the Book of Common Prayer. Nicholas was nominated by former and current trustees.
Bradley also took the opportunity to mark the contribution of the Canon Andrew Hawes. For 17 years Andrew was the editor of the Society’s magazine, The Prayer Book Today, “The work that you have done so cheerfully is so gratefully appreciated,” said the Chairman.
